Greaves was a little post Mannion. Wilf straddled, I believe, the Raich Carter/Johnny Haynes eras and also the war. As a consequence, he didn't win as many England caps as he should have, but was a hell of a good inside forward.
Greavsie started as a 17 year old with Chelsea in around '56 and was a goal machine for a few years, then spent a year in Milan around the same time as Law was in Turin. Spurs brought him back in '61 for 99,999.00 as they didn't want him to be the first 100m player. He was not a member of the double winning team in 61, but started in place of Les Allen in 61/62. Again, he was a prolific scorer for both club and country. He started the first game of the '66 world cup, but was then destined to watch.
As a pure 'goal scorer' he was better than anyone else I saw and England could really use him today (Even at 64 years old). |
